Insulation

Insulation using geomembranes

Geomembranes are plates made of plastic or rubber polymeric materials with very low permeability. These types of geosynthetics have many applications in the industry because of their natural barrier ability  against gases or liquids.

Thermoplastic polymers are mainly used in the production of geomembranes. This type of polymer becomes soft and flexible against heat while retains its basic properties. Then, after cooling, it regains the original properties. Therefore, they can be deformed or sealed using heat without decreasing its original properties.

Perhaps the most important application of this group of geosynthetics in civil engineering activities is to deal with the leakage or infiltration of water or other liquids and toxic and dangerous gases in their storage areas. Covering ponds and liquid storage pools and insulating areas that are exposed to toxic leakage are other uses of geomembrane.

The application of geomembranes is pervasive. Geomembrane can be used in almost all situations where there is a need to insulate areas against the infiltration of fluids from liquids or gases. The permeability of plastic geomembrane is in the range of 10-13 to  10-15 m/s, which is about 3,000 times less than natural materials such as natural clayey soil. The main applications geomembranes with the aim of insulation are:

1- Impermeable coating and liner in waste and toxic storage tank

2- As an impermeable coating in pools and water storage tanks

3- Secondary tanks in waste and toxic storage tanks

4- Cover in water transfer channels to prevent water leakage

5- Coverage for landfills (hazardous wastes type ١ and ٢ or ٣)

6- As an impermeable coating on dikes

7- Tunnel Insulation against water and moisture penetration

8- View for earth and rockfill dams

9- As impermeable layers in earth and rockfill dams

10- As Insulation layer under asphalt coatings

11- As a coating in the construction of flexible molds in cases where the settlement of materials is not allowed

12- Creating layers of insulation against moisture in all situations where water penetration can cause damage

Geosynthetic Clay Liners

Geosynthetic Clay Liners are a type of geocomposite that consist of two layers of geotextile or one layer of geotextile and one layer of geomembrane, and between them is filled with sodium or calcium bentonite. The two layers of geosynthetics and bentonite are connected to each other by special methods in which sodium or calcium bentonite is trapped between the geosynthetic layers. The bentonite between the two geosynthetic layers expands after contact with water and by creating a dense, homogeneous and integrated membrane layer and by blocking the empty cavities around it, it creates an insulation layer that remains stable throughout the life of the structure . Its installation does not require expertise and runs at high speed.
